brief update

the past few weeks have been super busy, so here's a condensed update!!

the weekend after rome i went to carnaval, which is a week long celebration in cadiz right before lent. it's also really big in brazil and venice. it's basically a mixture of halloween and a huge street party. people really go all out with their costumes, and some are really clever and funny! four of us went as ladybugs, or mariquitas, which isn't so original but it was pretty cute! we took the bus from granada around 1 and got there around 5. we hung out on the beach for a while and then headed into the center of the city to join in the festivities. it wound up being a fun night, but it was way too long. our bus wasn't set to leave until 6 in the morning, but since we're in spain, it didn't leave until 7. there also wasn't really much to do. there wasn't any music or food stands or anything, so we were kind of just wandering around and hoping it was 6.

the next weekend i headed off to belgium/ northern spain for 10 days. we went to three cities in belgium; brussels, bruges, and ghent. bruges was by far my favorite. it was a cute little canal town and all the houses and buildings were adorable. brussels was cool too, but also a little strange. but belgium was awesome thanks to their amazing beer, delicious waffles, fries, and chocolates. i think i gained 10 pounds there. the belgians are really into their beer. each beer has it's own specific glass that it's served in, and they're particular about it. even at the dumpiest bar they make sure to serve the beer in the right glass.

after belgium we took a 4-day trip to two cities in the north of spain, santander and san sebastian. the north of spain is so different!! everything was green and beautiful. grass doesn't really exist in southern spain. but each were adorable little beach towns where there isn't much to do but walk around and sit on the beach. one night in san sebastian we went out for pinchos, which is the north's version of tapas. i tried the craziest foods, such as veal cheek, goose liver, chicken hearts, rabbit, and pig's ear. some were delicious, but others, like the pig's ear, were kind of gross.

so now i'm back in granada, waiting for my family to arrive! they get here in 10 days!! then the week after that i'm off to scotland/ireland... then i have two friends visiting in april... then only a month left! i'm in disbelief how quickly these months have gone by... even though everyone always tells you it will, i'm always shocked by the fact that time does fly by. but i'm getting very excited to go back to the states and see all my family and friends. i love it here, but it's just not home!
